Pratchett's Discworld, which consists of a slightly convex disc (complete with edge-of-the-world drop-off and consequent waterfall) rests on the backs of four huge elephants, which are in turn standing on the back of an enormous turtle, Great A'Tuin. (If you open up the image, you'll see the red of the eye on the right hand bottom corner)
Going by Hindu mythology, the turtle is said to be an avtaar of Vishnu, and revered. And, incidentally, it's the turtle's carapace that is believed to support the Earth!
Too much rests on the turtles, and too many people have said it. So it must be ;)
